Msg from our Pres 3-2-09
Greetings SAEOP members. I would like to take a moment to remind you about some very important matters SAEOP is addressing at this time.
1. Bargaining Survey
By now, all of you should have received your bargaining survey in the inter-district mail which is due to SEA by March 16th. It is extremely important that you take the time to complete and send it because you, the membership, is directing the Bargaining Team on what is important and what you want us to bargain. There is also a space on the survey to write your comments; please do so. The results will be compiled and the comments read to incorporate into the input that has already been given. As the bargaining process progresses, SEA will be sending updates so you can stay informed.
2. Scholarship Papers
The SAEOP Scholarship Application Packet has been sent to the secondary schools and is also on our website, www.saeop.org. For those of you who work in the high schools, and who might know a deserving, graduating senior, please make them aware of this opportunity. If you have a son or daughter graduating from Seattle Public Schools this year, you may want your child to take advantage of this opportunity as well. You can address any questions or comments to Barb Slatt, Scholarship Chair, at Green Lake School, 252-5320.
There are also other scholarships that our webmaster, Cheryl Smith, has listed for association members as well. Please check out the site and apply if you are interested in these opportunities.
3. March 20th Inservice Day
Your SAEOP Professional Development Committee has met and designed an inservice opportunity for SAEOPs to be held at Ingraham High School on March 20th. Please mark your calendars; Kim van Atta will be sending out information shortly.
4. Special Resume/Interviewing Class
It is very unfortunate that some of our colleagues will be given Displacement or RIFF letters this spring. Although we are doing our best to challenge these decisions, we know that some individuals will need to look for new placements within or outside of the school district. To assist in this endeavor, a class has been scheduled for April 9th, Cover Letters, Site Applications, and Interviewing. It will be just for classified staff and you will have the opportunity to be paid to take the class by using some of your six professional development days if you should have some hours left. Please refer to the recent edition of the Unity Newsletter on the SEA website for additional information.
I would also encourage you to visit the SAEOP website, www.saeop.org as Cheryl is updating it weekly. It is a good way to stay informed as we receive information that all of you will want to know. As always, our officers and board members want to hear from you if you have questions, comments, or concerns, especially given the uncertainties due to the district's financial situation. Please know you are always welcome to email me as well to share any thoughts or ideas you would like explored.
Debbie Passi, SAEOP President
