Dear SAEOPs:
This has been a busy time for SAEOP and I would like to inform you about the following:

1. We are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our Installation Dinner on May 27th. I made an error on a previous email--the price per member and guest is $17 per person. This is still an excellent value for the buffet dinner we will be served at Salty's. Your RSVP and checks can be sent to Sue Daley at Greenwood Elementary School.

We will have entertainment, honor our student scholar, recognize our PSP receipients for the year, and hold officer and board member installations. We will also have a short business meeting, favors and doorprizes, and raffles to support our scholarship fund. The no-host bar will begin at 5 pm; the dinner at 6. This will be a wonderful chance to visit with friends and meet new ones!

2. One of the goals that SAEOP has been working on this year is an increased department budget allocation from SEA, and additional monies that can go toward offsetting the out-of-pocket expenses and time commitment of being officers. Our allotment of $7,916 has remained constant for many years despite the yearly dues increases. Recently the board sent a letter to the SEA Business and Finance Committee asking them to consider increasing SAEOP's department allocation, increase the monies needed to offset the travel expenses for the SAEOP president and vice-president to attend the national ESP conference, and provide stipend funds.

Currently SEA funds a stipend for the SEA President, Vice-President, and Treasurer. For the president and vice-president, these funds are in addition to their salary/benefits and release time from their regular jobs. The issue was brought to the SEA leadership's attention that the department presidents and vice-presidents (SAEOP, Paraprofessionals, and Substitutes) also put in an extraordinary amount of time while not being released from their jobs. We felt this was an equity issue given the amount of work that was going to be needed especially this year to prepare for contract talks and enforcement, and in working on member advocacy and issues.

SAEOP was given $1,000 to allocate towards this request. At our board meeting in April, a discussion was held on how to fairly divide the monies. A recommendation was made that we present to the membership the following to approve:

President - $500 Vice-President - $300
Treasurer - $200

This recommendation is patterned after the SEA leadership model. The reason for allocating funds to the Treasurer is the additional responsibility of attending the monthly SEA Business and Finance Committee meetings as well as all SAEOP meetings. It is also our hope to receive increased stipend funds from SEA to make it more attractive for future candidates to run for leadership positions.

3. This week we completed a major presentation of the SAEOP and Paraprofessional Contract proposals. The district will be posting them on its website; we have links on the SAEOP website, www.saeop.org, for you to access them.  Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

In closing, I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our dinner.  It is truly one of the most enjoyable times of the year as we have the opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate our successes and each other.

Warmly,

Debbie Passi,  SAEOP President
