Msg from our Pres 4-12-09
Dear SAEOPs: This is a reminder of our general meeting on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Roosevelt High School, 5 to 7 p.m. We will be voting on the proposed bylaw changes that were sent to your office/program/building and posted on our website, www.saeop.org. In order to hold the vote to change them, we must have a quorum present. It is very important for members to RSVP and attend for the following reasons:
o SEA asked us to look at and realign our bylaws to be in line with those of SEA and the other departments (the Main Cert Body, Parapros, and Substitutes). The most significant change is our officer election process and terms of office. To do this, we would hold our elections at the same time as the entire SEA membership elects the President, Vice President, and Treasurer, and use the association's nominations and elections procedures to vote for SAEOP officers. Terms would change to be two-year terms instead of one, matching all other elected officers and board members of SEA. As of now, because of this request, we have not held officer and board elections for next year. Olga Addae, SEA President and Chair of the SEA Bylaws Committee, wil be present to answer any questions on this realignment request.
o Chris Helsel, along with the Bylaws Committee, drafted language to clarify the roles and duties of the elected officers, so when it comes time for nominations, it is much more clear what the duties and expectations are. Most of the language was pulled from and reorganized from existing language for clarity.
o Language was drafted for our bylaws so that they are in line with our current affiliations practice; i.e., stating within them that we are affiliated with the Washington Association of Educational Office Professionals (WAEOP) and the National Association of Educational Office Professionals (NAEOP). Past budget practice has had us paying affiliation dues and contributing to the two respective organizations' scholarship funds so that our members could access those opportunities; we also had language in our bylaws about the president being a voting delegate to NAEOP but nothing indicating the affiliation.
o Language was drafted to clarify membership status. Besides the vote on the bylaws, we will spend some time updating you on the Contract Negotiations which have begun. The style of bargaining is significantly different than in past years; we will update you on the progress and things to look for in the coming months. And, we will have a special guest, Doris Lyons from WEA, to talk about the Job Classification System. There has been movement and progress to report on the negotiated Classification Study as well. Please RSVP Karen Putnam at Salmon Bay, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , to let us know if you are planning to attend. We will have light refreshments on hand, and we look forward to seeing you there.
Sincerely, Debbie Passi, SAEOP President
